I’m Worried My Child Isn’t Good Enough to Play Guitar
So you are asking yourself whether your child isn’t good enough to play guitar. Firstly, I’ve got to ask where that question is coming from.
What do you want them to do able to do on the guitar?
Do you want them to enjoy themselves playing the guitar?
Or are you more focused on the result they get?
Are you asking the question because your child isn’t practising and other children are doing better than them?
Or are you wondering whether your child is talented enough to play guitar?
About a little thing called Talent
This article is focused on the last question. And really links the other questions into it.
If you believe that your child needs innate talent to be able to play the guitar, then I’m here to let you know that talent plays a very small part in whether your child will be one day good at playing the guitar.
You definitely shouldn’t expect your child to be a natural born talent, and immediately pick up the guitar and find it easy.
And for most children, they do need a level of encouragement for them to practise. Hopefully you’ve already got them a great teacher, where they are having lots of fun going to lessons. However, nowadays with so many distractions around. Children need a little positive support to be consistent with their practising at home as well.
A little story…
Mozart was known as a child who was a natural talent because he was composing such amazing pieces from a young age. Little did people realise that there was a lot that went into this amazing genius than meets the eye.
Mozart had been surrounded by music from the moment he was born. From his father being a music instructor and also her elder sister was already playing piano.
Mozart was learning all about music for 10 years before he created anything amazing. He had done over 10,000 hours of practise. Even before performing with his sister at age of 6. He had already been practising night and day for two years, under the constant supervision of his father.
Mozart became what he did, not because of anything genetic. But because of his passion for music. And because of the hard work and dedication he put into it.
How you can help your child
You can also help your child by doing the same. If you would them to progress lots on the guitar, the best thing to do is help them by getting them the best instructor. Someone who makes your child want to learn to play and have lots of fun. So that they want to carry on learning for the rest of their life. And make it into a real skill for themselves.
You can also encourage them at home by being there for them. Encouraging them to practise. Or being there when they want someone to play to or demonstrate to.
I hope this helps you to understand a little more what goes into a child being amazing at music.
